Sock Workshop Part 2: Short Row Heel/Leg Set-up
We will be shaping the heel with the short-row technique. There are quite a few variations of this technique, but we will be doing the “Wrap and Turn” version.
At this point the top and bottom of the sock are identical. We now decide which side is the top and which side is the bottom by where we place our heel. In this pattern, needle 1 and 2 (the first 2 needles from the beginning of the round)
The heel will be worked flat (back and forth) over half of the total stitches; 40 stitches = 20 stitch heel, 44stitches = 22 stitch heel, 48 stitches = 24 stitch heel.
How to wrap and turn:
RS: bring yarn forward, between stitches, slip the next stitch, bring yarn around the slipped stitch, turn work. With yarn in front, slip the wrapped stitch.
WS: with yarn in front, slip the stitch you will be wrapping, turn the work, bring the yarn to the front (between stitches), slip the stitch to wrap from the left needle to the right, bring the yarn between the stitches.
Working flat : put all the stitches from needles 1 and 2 onto the same needle.
Row 1: knit until 1 stitch remains, wrap and turn
Row 2: slip the next stitch with yarn in front. Purl until one stitch remains, wrap and turn.
Row 3: with yarn in back, slip the next stitch, knit to the first slip stitch (from previous row), wrap and turn.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you have wrapped half (10, 12, 12) stitches. Ending with WS row
Picking up the wraps to complete the heel:
Row 1: slip the next stitch, knit to the first wrap, pick-up the wrap from the back of the stitch, place the wrap on the left needle, knit the stitches together. Turn.
Row 2: slip first stitch, purl to the first wrap, pick-up the wrap from the bottom of the stitch, place the wrap on the left needle, purl the stitches together, turn.
Repeat rows 1 and 2 until all wraps on the left have been worked (one wrap will remain on the right-hand side when the Right Side of the work is facing you. Do not turn.
Knit the remainder of the round, across the “top”, to get back to the beginning of the row.
Divide the heel stitches back to 2 needles from 1.
Next row: Pick-up wrap from the first stitch, place it on the left needle, knit the stitches together. Knit remainder of the round. Heel is now complete.
Leg: continuing to work in the round.
Knit ½” to 3” (5-30 rounds, depending on how much stockinette you want to work before the rib).
If desired, switch to size 3 needles and work knit 2, purl 2 rib for 2-6” (15-60 rounds, depending on how much ribbing you desire)
Finishing the sock: Use your favorite stretchy bind off. I’ll send the instructions for the “knit 2 together bind off” that I use during the week.
