A Year of Projects? October Into November

Fall Weather?? A walk to work.

The last 6 weeks have kinda flown by. Its been fall-ish and BACK to summer and back to fall around here. The election is over (and I have Opinions). My goals to continue creating, don’t impulse or stress buy all the yarn, and blog more are going ok. I’m always creating, I’ve impulse purchased LESS stuff (which reminds me: I need to pick up my online order from Joann’s!), but my blog efforts have fallen aside.

My favorite fall activity (besides seasonal coffee based beverages) is breaking my yarny babies out of hibernation. And even with the unhinged weather patterns, I’ve gotten to do A LITTLE of that.

Me wearing one of my handknits as I type this blog post

The last yarn I purchased was to fill in with a self-striping for a blanket. 10 x 50 gm in a light tan tinged peach DK (see below for main colors). Its not perfect, but it’ll do. I wanted a teal-y color but it was sold out in the weight I needed. Lame.
The more blankets I create leads me to this observation: I’m REALLY rubbish at guessing the yardage for blankets. I can usually get it right for sweaters, but I grossly underestimate how much I need for very large projects. I COULD consult a table, but where’s the DANGER in that??

Oh look, you can see where my kid left his dirty socks. Punk.

A description of my fall photo dump: I quilted a table runner out of delightful remnants I found. Its backed in fleece instead of the traditional batting and back fabric. My family likes the skull and mushroom fleece side.
One of my yarn purchases from the Shenandoah Fiber Fest, Spouse and I on a HOT afternoon at a local pumpkin patch/sunflower farm. A hat I knit my daughter from a Shenandoah Fiber Fest purchase (she wants double pom-poms sewn on top- I need to sew them on). A blanket I crocheted as a housewarming gift for my daughter’s bestie’s family (they recently purchased a house: 45 minutes away). The birthday cake I made my son- this is the 4th or 5th year I’ve done a graveyard themed cake for is (day before) Halloween birthday. A bad phone pic whilst out trick-or-treating. A pic of the kids and I on an AFTER SEASON Baltimore Harbor paddle boat ride. The near 70degree temps the first weekend of November allowed us to do a paddle boat ride. Not shown: MD science center chucks pumpkins off the roof the first Saturday after Halloween; its incredible. And lastly, me regretting my life decisisons of wearing a jacket on my walk to work. I was sweaty and hot, and did not at all think it appropriate weather for November 7th.

Knitting Update!

A first for me: I’m knitting a FINGERING weight sweater. For myself. I’m a largish adult. I ripped out part of the raglan yoke, and learned a valuable lesson: Don’t Drink and KNIT!!! My increases were JACKED. All the walking and knitting I did didn’t help. The colorwork section does not have enough contrast. Did I swatch? NO. Am I going to rip it back, also NO. I am going to carry on, and decided if I want to add a border or duplicate stitch to the fair isle section in appropriate colors. I have time to think on this. Honestly, this whole sweater is “lets hope this works out ok”. If it does, I’ll have to shift my sweater yarns lighter maybe? Then I’ll REALLY need to embrace the idea of slow fashion (har har har).

  1. I see someone who looks just like mom photo bombing the picture of you and spouse. Haha, welcome to my world of knitting fingering weight sweaters and tees. Hence my move to tracking stitches instead of projects. Love your fall colored sweater. Soo pretty and perfect. I’ve been loving this low humidity but warm weather. But it does mean a lot of changing clothes throughout the day.

    • I feel like I’m going to be working on this sweater for an ETERNITY!! But I think it’ll be more versatile here.

SO MANY LAYERS get shed between morning and afternoon! I forget my stuff at my desk because its 30 degrees warmer when I leave.

  2. You’ve been busy, looks like you are having a warmer autumn than we had summer! Tracking stitches would be a good way to keep motivated on such a long term item, I can’t see me ever knitting one because I need warmer jumpers here really. Good luck with it though.
