YOP: Y13-W4

This week I worked on a non-YOP knitting project (a GIANT scrappy shawl) while I found the emotional fortitude to start the sleeves on my sweater. Which when it comes down to it, aren’t difficult, but getting them started means gathering the proper tools and supplies. I started them Friday afternoon, when I decided I couldn’t put it off any longer. The below pics are from this afternoon; I made significant progress on the front (stopping at the end of that ball of yarn) and twenty-some rounds on the first sleeve.

I am liking the somewhat airy stitch quality. I don’t think I would have had enough yardage for a dense sweater, and this colorway is discontinued. I’m really excited for the weather to cool down so I can get to wearing my knits. I’m temperamentally built for a cooler climate!

I also sat down at my wheel and spun a little bit this week, satisfying my goal of spin once a month. There is no picture.

  1. I’m that way too. Sometimes I just don’t want to start something that is going to take concentrated brainpower – like picking up stitches. I come up with excuses to work other projects until I really have to get back to it. Now you can enjoy just working your way down the sleeve.

    • Picking up the under arm was pretty interesting. I THOUGHT I cast on an even number, but apparently I cast on 15 stitches on each side. I counted them both MULTIPLE times because I couldn’t believe I was that silly.
That doesn’t even make sense! That is just going to be a problem for future-me after I finish both the sleeves.

  2. Good job getting all the things to begin the sleeve. Sometimes I spend more time worrying about beginning a portion of a project than actually completing said portion. Usually I worry and fret for nothing because it all turns out right in the end.

    • That EXACTLY sums it up. Since I’m not using a pattern, I get nervous when I take notes that my notes won’t be correct and the other side will be wrong. It has yet to happen, but that doesn’t stop me from fretting about nothing!

  3. You should move to the Highlands, it’s been pretty cool here and rarely gets hot…but when it does of course our houses aren’t equipped for it because they are designed to keep heat in and no fans or aircon built in. I have months that go by without spinning then I do a bit. I like your spin once a month aim as its achievable and maybe I’ll copy that

    • I would likely LOVE living in the Highlands, I’m pretty much built for that kind of climate. Additionally, there are extra months of wear for all my wooly creations!
In the past I’ve gone YEARS without spinning! Once a week seems like a lot, but once a month (for 30 minutes to an hour) is completely doable! I have imposed upon myself not buying any more fiber until I spin down the POUNDS (or kilos if you prefer) in my possession!

  4. I love cool weather…..not cold but cool enough for sweaters and long pants. Congrats on your sleeve progress. How much spinning can you do in your once a month time? I don’t spin so have no clue.

    • How much spinning can I do once a month? That’s a good question. I have no idea!! Depends on the time and thickness. My best guess is about half an ounce to an ounce while my spouse and I watch TV after the kids go to bed (45 min to an hour or so).
Right now I have a bag of odds and ends, and I’m just pulling out a chunk, working it up, and going from there. My current “project” is just random bits on one bobbin, and then spin one of my undyed rovings to ply into a random (but still cohesive) yarn. I did that about 12 years ago, and then knit it into a shawl. It is STILL one of my favorites!

I love that there are climates for everyone! My mom is very sensitive to cold, and HATES the winters in PA. She has been going to FL for winter for the past 20 years, and complains about winter slightly less while there.
